Picture Butte is 27 km north of Lethbridge on Highway 25, with Highway 519 running through and the Oldman River nearby. The 2021 census counted 1,930 residents in 689 occupied homes. The town grew on the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation System, built in 1923, and on sugar beets until the sugar factory closed in 1978; today it calls itself the Livestock Feeding Capital of Canada, and the feedlots around it shape what comes off local properties.

The Town runs a scheduled garbage collection program for household and commercial waste, but there is no landfill in town, and anything bigger than the cart, from a sectional to a shed's worth of scrap, has to travel to the Lethbridge Waste and Recycling Centre or be picked up. Picture Butte is on the same route day as Coaldale and Coalhurst, so a full load costs the same as one in the city and a small single item may wait for that day.

Common Picture Butte jobs: acreage and farmyard scrap that is metal-heavy and goes to recycling at $10 per tonne rather than the $115 general-waste rate, old fencing and corral boards, and estate cleanouts in the older homes near the town's museum and historical village.
