Where it is and when it is open

The City of Lethbridge runs one landfill, called the Waste and Recycling Centre. Its address is 213044 Township Road 100 in Lethbridge County, northeast of the city. The City's own directions are to follow 28 Street North until the road bends to the right, about 7 km out of town; the Centre is just after the bend on the left. Older references to other addresses are out of date.

Hours are Monday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from April 1 to October 31, and 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from November 1 to March 31. It is closed on statutory holidays except Family Day and Boxing Day. High winds can close the site without much notice. Call 311 (403-320-3111 from outside Lethbridge) before a long drive on a windy day.

Tipping fees, as published by the City

Fees are charged per tonne, weighed on the scale, with a $5 minimum on garbage categories. General waste from homes and businesses is $115 per tonne, and so is mixed construction and demolition waste. Special waste, which includes anything containing asbestos and shingles for disposal, is $135 per tonne, must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead, and needs a City manifest; the landfill operator's line for that is 403-359-7188.

Sorted loads are cheaper because they are diverted. Asphalt pavement, brick and block, sand, porcelain sinks and toilets, and scrap metal are $10 per tonne. Stone and countertops and recyclable concrete under 2.5 by 2.5 feet are $25 per tonne; oversized concrete or concrete with heavy rebar is $75. Clean new-construction drywall, pallets and dimensional lumber are $65. Clean asphalt shingles and tar paper are $75. In the yard categories, clean topsoil and sod are $5, grass, leaves and garden waste are $25, green wood and stumps are $25, and waste soil is $50. Loads under 50 kg in the construction and yard categories are free.

What is free to drop off

A long list of items is accepted at no charge. Electronic waste, used oil, filters and containers, cooking oil, small engine equipment, bicycles and tires are free for anyone. For Lethbridge residents only, batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, household hazardous waste, mercury thermostats, propane tanks and medical sharps are also free. Paint goes in with household hazardous waste.

Separately, the Free Saturday Disposal Program lets Lethbridge residents bring up to 250 kg of extra household and bulky waste every Saturday, year-round, at no charge. Above 250 kg the tipping rates apply to the whole load, so weigh up before you fill the trailer. The program is funded through the waste utility, which is why it is for residents with a City account.

The three drop-off depots in town

You do not have to drive to the landfill for recycling or yard waste. The City runs a depot in each part of the city: West at 296 Bridge Drive West, at the top of the hill before University Drive; North at 2200 Stafford Drive North, at Scenic Drive North; and South at 2665 28 Avenue South, between the soccer complex and the judo club. The recycling stations are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and take paper, flattened cardboard, cans, foil, plastics numbered 1 to 7, bagged shredded paper, bagged plastic bags and glass. They do not take styrofoam, electronics, paint, oil or hazardous waste.

The yard waste sites at the same depots run from April to mid-November, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., for branches up to 6 feet long and 8 inches across, leaves, grass and garden trimmings in paper bags no larger than 30 gallons. Sod, dirt, lumber, fence posts, stumps and mixed loads are refused, as are commercial vehicles.

Mattresses and appliances: the current rules

As of April 1, 2026, mattresses and box springs are accepted at the yard waste sites at the three depots, where they are sent to a local recycler that recovers the metal, wood, foam and fabric. A mattress with visible signs of bed bugs is not accepted at the depots; it must be wrapped in plastic and taken to the Waste and Recycling Centre. The City's fee schedule lists no per-mattress charge; a mattress taken to the landfill is weighed as general waste.

Appliances go in the scrap metal stream at $10 per tonne. Anything with Freon, meaning fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, carries the $35 per unit surcharge unless a licensed individual has removed the refrigerant and you can prove it. Before you load the truck

Tarp it and sort it. A mixed load is the most expensive thing you can bring; all metal or all clean wood is the cheapest. Drop electronics, paint and tires at the free stations first. If the pile needs two people or a trailer you do not own, a phone quote from a local hauler is free and the fees above are already in it.
